Rawnsley Park Station Eco Villas
Flinders Ranges Accommodation

by Anthea Hudson

Visiting the magnificent Flinders Ranges?  Why not try something special and make the unique Eco Villa accommodation at Rawnsley Park your 'home base' for the stay?

Rawnsley Park is a working sheep station owned by Tony & Julieanne Smith, a multi-generational 'Flinders Family', approximately 430km north of Adelaide, set against the spectacular backdrop of Rawnsley Bluff.  It is not far from the well known Wilpena Pound area and also central to many other amazing locations in the Flinders Ranges.

Eco Villa Natural Light SkylightThere are 8 beautiful Eco Villas on the property- Acacia, Sandalwood, Cypress, Casuarina, Redgum, Mallee, Salt Bush and Hakea- and while they are designed with many eco features, they do not skimp on comfort or appeal.  Nestled amongst native vegetation, the Eco Villas have privacy and a sense of living with nature.  Each window gives you a new delight- spectacular mountain scenery, abundant bird-life, peace and serenity.

We had the privilege of staying in the lovely 2 bedroom Casuarina Villa, and also visiting the 1 bedroom Salt Bush.

As you enter you are struck by the tasteful decor and quality, and the ambience is of light and spaciousness.  No dingy cramped spaces here!  The lounge area has comfortable sofas and a TV/DVD set-up for entertainment.

The dining area has a table and chairs, with plenty of room to eat in comfort, and wonderful views to enjoy as you dine.

A fully self-contained kitchen, including fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher and all necessary cooking and eating utensils etc, allows guests to make their own meals if desired.  A variety of breakfast supplies are provided to the Villa each day including bulk cereals, yoghurt, fruit, croissants, milk, juice, tea and coffee supplies.   A complimentary cheese plate and bottle of South Australian wine are provided on arrival.

Guests may also choose to enjoy meals in the fascinating Woolshed Restaurant.  Some food can also be ordered to be delivered to your Villa.  This includes a barbecue pack which can be cooked on the outdoor barbecue on the deck, and enjoyed at the outdoor dining setting, while watching the spectacular sunsets common in this area.

There is a choice of 1 or 2 bedroom Villas, with king size beds, or 2 single beds on request.  All linen and bedding is supplied.  Above the beds a skylight allows the brilliant starry sky to be enjoyed while drifting off to sleep.  The skylight also has an electrically operated cover system, if you would prefer to have it closed.

The bathrooms- each bedroom having its own en-suite in the 2 bedroom villas- are inviting, with a huge deep bath, lovely shower, hand basin, guest robes and fluffy towels.  Toiletries are provided.  Each Villa also has it's own laundry facilities, with washing machine and dryer.

Due to extreme temperatures sometimes experienced in the area, the Villas do have ducted reverse cycle air conditioning installed, however the clever thermal design features often make their use unnecessary at most times of the year.

Rainwater supplies delicious clean drinking water to the Villas, while good quality bore water is used for other water requirements.  The power is generated by a large solar array, just down the hill a little, with a backup generator if needed.

Waste water is dealt with by a special Biolytix system, which uses a polythene tank with alternate layers of peat soil and polythene tubes that create an environment where bacteria can naturally treat organic matter, delivering highly treated water suitable for subsurface irrigation.

The Eco Villas were designed by Paul Downton (Ecopolis Architects), an Adelaide architect whose environmentally sustainable architecture is acclaimed internationally, and have such eco-friendly features as straw-bale construction, recycled timber and passive heating and cooling techniques.

The Eco Villas are certainly the 'cream of the crop' of the accommodation facilities at Rawnsley Park, but for those who find the prices out of their budget range, there are also other options such as more standard cabins, a caravan park and a bunkhouse.

You can also take advantage of the tours Rawnsley offers, such as scenic flights, hot air ballooning, walks, horse riding and 4WD tours.

Rawnsley Park is a truly magical place to stay.  Beauty and nature at your doorstep, the magnificent Flinders Ranges to explore, friendly hosts and staff... peace and solitude to renew the spirit.  Ecotourism at its best.

As one of the visitors noted in the visitor book:  "What an unforgettable experience it has been to stay in this stunning villa in its magnificent setting.  We have fallen in love with the Flinders Ranges- its colours, the silence, the ancient grandeur- you, and Mother Nature, have done everything to perfection."  What more could you ask for?
