Playstation VR (PSVR) in Australia

Sony Playstation VR will launch in Australia in October this year (2016).

Check out the video below, where Sony make the initial first announcement.. before we get into the details.

PLAYSTATION VR SPECIFICATIONS

610 grams (not including the long USB cable)

5.7-inch 1080p OLED screen at 1920 x 1080 resolution

Display has both: 120Hz and 90Hz refresh rate modes

The field of view is approximately 100 degrees

Three-axis gyroscope & three-axis accelerometer for motion sensing

The PlayStation VR is a tethered headset that uses special curved lenses to magnify and stretch a 5.7-inch screen across your field of vision.

Like other Virtual Reality headsets, it uses a host of sensors to tell which way your head is pointing at all times. That way, no matter where you look (even if you turn around and look behind you), you see the part of a virtual world that you'd expect to see if you were actually there, looking at it with your own two eyes.

The PSVR's headset is said to fit better than the tight 'scuba-goggle' designs of the PC-based Vive or Rift. A simple headband, and gentle rubber eyepieces fit over glasses easily (if neccesary).

The well-padded headset easily and securely cinches up to your head, just by turning a bike-helmet like dial on the back of the device.

While wearing the headset you will be able to access all of the the PS4's menus and features.

You can also enter cinematic mode and play any normal PS4 game (or app) on a simulated 16:9 screen inthe headset.

PLAYSTATION VR GAMES

What really sells any new gaming platform (and to some degree this IS an entirely new platform!) is the GAMES!

Unlike some other PC based VR headsets, PSVR is entirely developed for Virtual Reality games.

While there are already well over 100 game titles in development for Playstation VR, check out this video showcasing just 10 of the amazing games coming to the platform.

WHATS IN THE BOX WITH PLAYSTATION VR

Here is a guide to everything that comes in the PlayStation VR box, including bud earphones, the virtual reality headset, cables and the processing unit.

The headset connects to the PS4 with the rather long USB cable.

The separate processing unit is a small box that sits between the PS4 and your TV to process the 3D audio and to power a feature that Sony call Social Screen.

Social Screen allows your TV and your PSVR to show two perspectives of the same game at all times. So that other people can still watch the screen while you have the VR headset on.

When the player is playing alone the TV will show a flat 2D version of what he's seeing.

Using multiplayer PSVR games the headset user and those using the TV could see two entirely different perspectives to play with or against each other at the same time.

The small processing unit also powers what Sony calls Cinematic mode, which will let you see any PlayStation 4 content you'd normally see through your TV on a giant virtual screen in the VR headset.

To further the VR experience, a set of bud earphones fit into the ear while you're wearing the PSVR headset, for enhanced spacial 3d sound.

Sony say some 360 degree videos can also be viewed in the PSVR if you load them onto your PS4 first.

You can also view panoramic photos the same way.

WHATS *NOT* IN THE BOX WITH PLAYSTATION VR

The Playstation VR package does not include the motion sensing Move controller (same as originally designed for Sony PS3) which some PSVR games will support, although the standard DualShock 4 controller can be used in its place for many games.

The Sony Playstation Camera has been hard to find at retailers in Australia since the launch of the PS4, as many players bought them as an easy way to broadcast themselves over the Playstation Network using YouTube and Twitch.

The Playstation 4 camera IS a required accessory for Playstation VR to work at all.

Playstation Australia's Michael Ephraim assured there would be plenty on PSVR Cameras for PS4 on the shelves come November and the release of Playstation VR.

"There will be enough cameras for every PlayStation VR set," he said, stressing that while the camera is necessary for PSVR, the Move controller is not.

HOW MUCH DOES PLAYSTATION VR COST IN AUSTRALIA?

The price of Sony PSVR in Australia is $549.95 Australian dollars.

The $549.95 price includes the VR headset, the earphones and everything you need to get PSVR experiences from your PlayStation 4 --- Apart from the $90 Sony PlayStation 4 Camera (which is required for VR tracking).

What this means is that the minimal you will need to pay for Playstation VR (if you don't already have a PS4 camera) will very likely be around the $650 mark.

COMPARE: The Oculus Rift and HTC's Vive VR headsets will both set you back around AUD$1100
... and that's after you've built up or purchased a powerful enough Windows PC to run the VR headset (which would quite possibly be another AU$1000 at least).

Also, the games available on Playstation VR will be much more tightly curated than on the Wild West of PC.

Mr Ephraim said that while the nature of VR meant that PSVR games would offer something very different to traditional video games, they wouldrun the gamut from small experimental games to big-budgeted blockbuster games.

"The games for PlayStation VR will be every bit as diverse as the games for PlayStation 4," Mr Ephraim said.

"There are more than 160 titles currently under development, and 50 expected to launch by the end of 2015."

Playroom VR for PSVR

The Playroom VR, is a collection of small virtual reality games, designed to introduce players to the idea of playing in a virtual reality space. The Playroom VR will be offered as a free download to players at launch.

PLAYSTATION SELLS OUT ALMOST INSTANTLY IN EUROPE

Not long after being announced, PlayStation VR was made available for pre-order in European Amazon stores including Uk, Germany and France, but it wasn’t up there for long.

The headset remained available only for a couple of minutes, before being entirely sold out.

So, when the time comes to get yours.. Good luck! :)
